ENGAGING METHODS: PARTICIPATORY RESEARCH TRAINING 28 November
- 24 November 08

Practical, hands on introduction to inclusive participatory research methods for involving people in decision-making,planning and reviews of all kinds.

Draws on Participatory Appraisal and Participatory Learning and Action approaches (PLA).

Discounts/dana available for community groups and those on low incomes.

Maitrisara, an experienced participatory practitioner, may co-train on this course depending on numbers.

Said Taseef Younes of Peterborough City Council: "I found it all very useful and I'm going to tell other people about the methods and tools and test them out with local groups".

"One of the best trainings we've ever had", commented a learner from a charity working with homeless young people earlier this year.

Some participants like to bring with them a project or idea they can take away and work with using the methods and tools taught on the day.

There's also an option for people to meet for a shorter follow up session in the New Year to get further support and learn from each other (date/ location to be worked out together).

The trainer Sally Ramsden also works with the GKG Collective (www.gkgltd.co. uk/collective.html). She specialises in communications, participation and learning, with a background in international development.

Other ideas on change
- 26 September 07

I have come across this paper on promoting change (what we want, after all). It sets out eleven "lessons" as key conditions for change and a lot of it is like the PPfC Guidelines for Commissioners. It could be helpful if your commissioners are already clear that they want some change. John

Participation and Environment: building a community-agency-business partnership
- 29 April 07

The Kingfisher Project, Burton upon Trent, started out as concerns about litter, safety and decline in a local beauty spot alongside a canal. Using participatory conflict management approaches to explore concerns and opportunities, a project has slowly been built that is now well-funded and under community control with a trust fund and clear ways forward. This report describes the background where participatory approaches were first used and what impacts started to emerge. http://www.mind-the-gap.net/pdfs/kingfisher_project_report_2jul05.pdf
